1) Yes, I have held a museum job in the past. I worked in the Museum Store/Collectors Corner in the Toledo Museum of Art. I was led to acquiring this job by Burcaw`s #5, answering adverstisements of museum job openings. My job was half concerned with selling the typical gift store items, from postcard, posters, tshirts, and the full toys that I feel art museum stores are known for. The second part of my job involved selling original works of art made by local artists. The collectors corner portion of the store sold many different style of artwork: pottery, glass, jewelry, paintings, and photographs. I had to know each artist and what they sold and where exactly they were from. I had to know the types of materials they used or styles of art they preferred while creating their works of art. Like any museum store, I was also responsible for representing the museum in a positive manner. I had to direct visitors to specific areas, I had to have a working knowledge of the collection and ecspecially the touring exhibits that were visiting the museum. I did not just sell postcard, I sold an experience.

ReplyDeleteOmg! I would absolutely LOVE this job. I wish I had the 10 years experience, I would totally apply for it.
ReplyDeleteYes--so many people want to work here. I had a grad school peer who worked there and then went into the publishing industry. So, Catherine, it sounds like you've got a great background for this kind of job. And I like the way you characterized your position at the museum store.
