Can I count the half hour I spend talking to Dr. Castenda about my items then going to the museum to see them toward my lab hours????
After reading the main Methods blog, I find myself excited to start the display and installation aspect of this project. I`m definitely more of a "hands on" kind of person, so I am volunteering to do as much work as possible in these 2 areas.
I used to work in an art gallery, so hopefully I will be able to bring something to the table when working with the display cases. I was thinking about arranging them by Native group? I suppose we`ll see what the group consensus is.

My items
After reading through the accession file, I have discovered that I have 2 Pomo twined baskets and 1 Yurok hat. The price in 1962 of these items compared to today is funny to read, only funny because I guess I assumed that some of my items would of been worth more, ecspecially after I saw them in the museum.

I posted a link to the website concerning the new exhibit opening up at the California Museum in March. I definitley think this exhibit will be worth checking out. I like how they showed examples of the information sheets of certain pieces showing us what tribe the basket belongs to, the styles and the type of basket.
I also posted a link to The Language of Native American Baskets, which is shown from the weaver`s point of view. I loved how they showed the techniques that were used, the use of baskets for the culture and also the tradition of basketry throughout the culture. It makes you realize truly that these pieces that we are working with aren`t just for a class and the excitement that comes along with putting up an exhibit, but to just get a glimpse of the history and back story that come along with these pieces is really quite extrodinary.

I read a really interesting article in the Museum Anthropology journal concerning new regulations in NAGPRA. They talked about a new rule, like a priority list, where the museum would off the tribe the remains whose land the remains were found on at the time, and if these tribes don`t want the remains, the priority would shift from that tribe to recognized tribes that used to occupy the lands aboriginally and if this would go on and on until the museum finally would just give the remains to a tribe that could dispose of them probably. The author, Jordan Jacobs, views this new rule as a huge failure.
I was thinking about title names and when reading Burcaw, I knew the title needed to be short and sweet, so maybe "A journey through NAGPRA"? I don`t know, I`ll keep working on this.

Lab Hours #1
Ok so I spent roughly 1 hour perfecting my blog and profile and yes, I know it isn`t quite amazing yet, but it`ll get there.
I spent about 2-3 hours going from website to website that was included on the Museum`s page. I did find some intresting pictures and articles, ecspecially the one recommended about ethincs. I also found a good article about the museum in Kansas City, MO in the Wall Street Journal.
